Road Freight Central America
to and from Costa Rica
FTL and LTL along the Central American corridor. We coordinate imports and exports between Costa Rica and Panama, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala, under the customs mode your cargo needs.
When does road freight make sense in Central America?
Between Costa Rica and the rest of the isthmus, road transport usually beats the alternatives for a simple reason: it is the only mode that connects door to door with no transhipment, no waiting for a vessel schedule and none of the surcharges of an air shipment.
The Central American corridor β the highway network linking Panama to Guatemala through Costa Rica β moves an enormous volume of commercial cargo every day. Over regional distances, a truck leaves when the cargo is ready, not when the itinerary says so.
Where road transport makes the difference:
- Cargo with a committed date that cannot wait for a weekly ocean sailing.
- Mid-sized volumes, too large for courier and too small to justify a full container by sea.
- Door-to-door delivery, with no port handling or terminal costs.
- Frequent replenishment between headquarters and regional branches.
FTL or LTL: which one your cargo needs
The two road modes solve different problems.
| FTL β Full truck load | LTL β Consolidated load | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | The truck travels with your cargo only | Your cargo shares the truck with other shipments |
| Best when | You fill most of the equipment | You have partial volume |
| Timing | Direct, no intermediate stops | Subject to the consolidation route |
| Handling | Minimal: loaded and unloaded once | Greater, because of consolidation |
| Cost | You pay for the whole equipment | You pay for the share you use |
The rule of thumb: if your cargo fills more than half the truck or is sensitive to handling, FTL usually works out better even when the freight looks higher. If it is partial volume with no extreme urgency, LTL gives more for your money.
Countries and routes we cover
We coordinate road cargo in both directions: imports into Costa Rica and exports from Costa Rica to the region.
- Panama β via Paso Canoas, the southern border.
- Nicaragua β via PeΓ±as Blancas, the northern border.
- Honduras
- El Salvador
- Guatemala
Routes heading north cross several borders, and each crossing has its own procedure. Which posts are authorised and how each one works is explained in the guide to customs entry points in Costa Rica.
Customs modes: what really drives the cost
This is the part that most surprises anyone moving regional cargo for the first time. A truck crossing borders can do so under different customs regimes, and the choice changes both timing and cost.
- International transit: the cargo crosses the country without being cleared, under customs control, until it reaches its final destination. Useful when Costa Rica is a waypoint rather than the destination.
- Clearance at the border: the cargo is cleared on entry and from then on moves as domestic goods.
- Combined schemes for shipments with multiple destinations or consolidations.
We work with all of them. Which one suits you is not our preference: it depends on your final destination, on whether the cargo stays or continues, and on how you want to handle duties. It is one of the first things we define when quoting.
What we need to quote
With these details we can give you a firm rate:
- Exact origin and destination, with pickup and delivery addresses
- Description of the goods and their value
- Total weight and dimensions or number of pallets
- Type of packaging: pallets, boxes, sacks, bulk
- Whether it is dangerous goods β in that case the hazmat process applies
- The date the cargo is ready
If you do not have everything, send what you have. With origin, destination and approximate weight we can already point you in the right direction.
The process, step by step
- Quotation. We review route, customs mode and equipment type for your cargo.
- Documentation. We prepare and check what each border requires before the truck departs.
- Pickup. The equipment loads at the origin you specify.
- Border crossings. We handle the formalities at every post along the route.
- Tracking. We keep you posted on the shipment's progress along the way.
- Delivery. At the final address, with the documentation in order.
Where a regional shipment is won or lost
At the borders. An incomplete document stops the truck and time there is expensive β which is why we settle that leg before the cargo leaves.
FTL or LTL, to suit your cargo
We assess volume, urgency and destination to tell you which one fits. When both are viable, we quote both so you decide with the numbers in front of you.
Quote within 24 h
With origin, destination and approximate weight we come back with mode, rate and requirements in less than one business day.
Borders sorted in advance
We prepare the documentation for every crossing before the truck departs. A missing paper stops the cargo at the border, and time there is expensive.
Every customs mode
International transit, clearance at the border or combined schemes. We define which one fits your final destination and how you want to handle duties.
What people ask us most about regional road freight
What is the difference between FTL and LTL?
With FTL (full truck load) the truck carries only your goods: it runs direct, with no intermediate stops and minimal handling. With LTL (consolidated load) your shipment shares equipment with others, so you pay for the share you use but the routing depends on the consolidation. As a rule of thumb, if you fill more than half the truck or your cargo is sensitive to handling, FTL usually works out better even when the freight looks higher.
Which Central American countries does the service reach?
We coordinate road cargo between Costa Rica and Panama, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala, in both directions. Belize works differently: Central American equipment reaches the border and transhipment is unavoidable, so that route is assessed case by case.
What is international transit and when does it make sense?
It is the regime under which cargo crosses a country without being cleared, under customs control, until it reaches its final destination. It makes sense when Costa Rica is a waypoint rather than the destination. If the goods stay in the country, the usual route is clearance at the border. We work with both, and the choice depends on your destination and how you want to handle duties.
Do you move cargo from Costa Rica to Central America?
Yes, in both directions: imports into Costa Rica and exports from Costa Rica to the rest of the region. Regional export by road is a route many Costa Rican companies do not take advantage of simply because they do not know the process.
What do you need to quote a road shipment?
Exact origin and destination, description and value of the goods, total weight, dimensions or number of pallets, type of packaging and the date the cargo is ready. If it is dangerous goods, let us know, because that changes both the equipment and the procedure. With origin, destination and approximate weight we can already point you in the right direction.
