"And how long until it arrives?" is one of the first questions when importing from China. The answer depends on the transport mode and on several stages that add days before and after the trip. Here we give realistic ranges so you can plan without surprises.
In this guide
Times by transport mode
These are typical ranges for the international transit from China to Costa Rica (port to port / airport to airport), not counting paperwork:
| Mode | Approx. transit | Ideal for |
|---|---|---|
| Air | ≈ 5 to 10 days | Urgent, high value |
| Ocean FCL | ≈ 30 to 45 days | Large volumes |
| Ocean LCL | ≈ 35 to 50 days | Small volumes |
LCL usually takes a bit longer than FCL because it adds consolidation and deconsolidation times.
The stages that add days
The ship or plane transit is only one part. The total "door to door" time includes:
- Origin: supplier production, pickup and export formalities in China.
- International transit: the trip itself (the table above).
- Destination: unloading, customs clearance and taxes, and inland transport to your warehouse.
What can delay your cargo
- Peak seasons: before Chinese New Year or Christmas, everything gets congested.
- Incomplete documentation: an invoice error stops clearance.
- Customs inspections: if the cargo is selected for physical review.
- Connections and transshipments: routes with stops add days.
How to plan
Always plan with a time buffer over the theoretical transit, especially for ocean. If your product is seasonal or you cannot run out of stock, order well in advance or combine modes (ocean for the bulk, air for urgent restocks).
