What to evaluate
1. Experience and specialization
Check their track record and whether they handle your type of cargo. Moving general cargo containers is not the same as dangerous goods or cold chain. A forwarder experienced in your field anticipates problems instead of improvising.
2. Route coverage and network
Confirm they have agents and a network in your origins (for example China) and that they handle all modes —FCL, LCL and air— to give you options per shipment.
3. Rate transparency
Be wary of quotes that are "too cheap": many hide charges that show up later. Look for a clear all-in rate, with every item detailed. Transparency when quoting is the best predictor of what working with that forwarder will be like.
4. Communication and tracking
For a company, knowing where the cargo is matters. Evaluate whether they assign a dedicated account manager, whether they respond fast and give proactive tracking (so you do not have to chase them). Poor communication costs time and money.
5. Backing and compliance
Verify they comply with customs regulations, offer cargo insurance and have clear processes for the unexpected. A good forwarder protects you from fines and held cargo.
